Puppet welcomes new board director and CMO
It has been an incredible year of growth for Puppet. In the last few months alone we put on an amazing Puppetize PDX, released a powerful State of DevOps Report, keynoted the Open Source Summit in Lyon France, moved Project Nebula to public beta, released Puppet Remediate 1.1, launched an updated Puppet Forge, crossed 7K monthly users of Bolt, released Puppet Enterprise 2019.2, and partnered with PIE (Portland Incubator Experiment) to launch the Innovation Lab at Puppet. It is a privilege to be part of such an innovative team and a team that cares so deeply about community — both our open source community and the broader communities we work and live in.
As we continue to drive accelerated impact in the marketplace, we are making two additions to the Puppet family: Michel Feaster joining as a board member and Erik Frieberg joining as our chief marketing officer. Both of these leaders have deep industry expertise, outstanding track records of impact, and a passion for making a difference. They both also have known of and been engaged with Puppet in different ways over the years. With all the exciting technological change going on, there has never been a better time for both Michel and Erik to officially be joining our team as we scale the company and take our customers where they need to be in an increasingly multi-cloud world.
Michel is the co-founder and CEO of Usermind, responsible for company vision, strategic direction, planning and execution. Michel’s enterprise software career spans more than 20 years with roles in sales, products, strategic marketing and general management. Before founding Usermind, Michel was VP of products at Apptio, where she drove product strategy, defined the category and discipline of Technology Business Management and helped grow the company from 30 to almost 400 employees. Previously in her career, Michel worked at HP Software where she led the acquisition of Opsware for $1.6B, managed the combined Opsware, Radia and AppIq product teams and defined the service automation category. She also spent almost 8 years at Mercury Interactive learning how to build world-class products like LoadRunner and QualityCenter.
Michel is a fabulous addition to the Puppet board given her industry experience and no-nonsense leadership style. It is great to have another operator on the board and I look forward to partnering with Michel as we take Puppet to the next level. When I spoke to Luke Kanies, Puppet’s Founder, about Michel he shared,“I have been a fan of Michel’s for many years. In fact, I tried to recruit Michel to run Product for us at Puppet many years ago. It is great for her join us now and bring her leadership, expertise, and passion into the board room.”
So why has Michel chosen to join the Puppet team now? According to Michel, "Throughout my career in enterprise software, I've seen many technologies come and go. I believe Puppet is here to stay. Puppet is pervasive in the enterprise and beloved by its vast community. The product investments they're making to close the gap between finding and fixing vulnerabilities, automate multi-cloud environments and continuously deliver compliant infrastructure and applications are what all enterprises need today. It is clear to me that Puppet’s broad open source community and the team’s strong cultural foundation are key competitive advantages and it’s an honor to contribute to Puppet’s future success."
Erik’s extensive marketing experience in the technology industry, along with his strong leadership values, make him an outstanding chief marketing officer to build upon the great success Puppet has had to date and lead us forward in our next chapter of growth. Erik comes to us from VMware where he was senior vice president of Cloud, Product and Integrated Marketing. In this role, he led VMware’s cloud marketing initiatives, developing integrated marketing campaigns and product marketing for VMware’s solutions. Earlier at VMware, Erik led the marketing efforts for VMware's End-user Computing division where he established Airwatch as the leader in enterprise mobility as CMO of the business unit. Prior to VMware, Erik was CMO at MongoDB where he created industry leading community marketing program and championed the company’s expansion into EMEA and Asia. Erik has also help senior leadership roles at HP, Borland and BEA.
Erik’s engagement with Puppet goes back many years. In fact, Erik has been a fan of Puppet since the early days when he first met Luke Kanies eight years ago. So why is Erik joining Puppet now? I asked Erik and here is what he had to say:
“It is such an exciting time for the company. At Puppetize PDX, I got a taste of the latest product innovations: Bolt, Puppet Remediate, Nebula, and the work we’re doing on the Forge. It was obvious that everyone — long-time open source users, large enterprise customers, partners, employees, media and analysts — was excited by where Puppet is going as a company.
I’m excited, too. Having come from VMware, where I was responsible for leading VMware’s cloud marketing initiatives, I’ve seen firsthand how cloud-native computing is transforming businesses. The world has changed significantly since Luke started Puppet in 2005, but it’s become clear that the problems organizations face remain the same no matter what kind of infrastructure they’re running or where. The teams that operate infrastructure need to ensure consistency and compliance of their systems, they need to find and fix vulnerabilities quickly and they’re looking for automated, self-service ways to deliver infrastructure and applications more reliably.
Puppet helps in all of these areas, meeting customers where they are today and helping them get to where they need to be in the future. And that future is only going to be more complex with more of the world around us being run by software. There’s a lot at stake for companies today to make the necessary process, technology and people changes required to stay competitive and Puppet is here to help.”
WIth the addition of Michel and Erik, Puppet has never been better positioned to help customers modernize their practices as they shift to DevOps and adopt cloud technologies and workflows. Please join me in welcoming both Michel Feaster and Erik Frieberg to the Puppet family.
