Optimizing your DevOps toolkit: insights from Puppetize PDX
How much impact do tooling choices have on your DevOps practice? The right toolchain has the potential to improve collaboration and efficiency, but that can be difficult to measure, and each organization and team has its own needs and preferences. So how do you gauge success and, most importantly, maximize the value of your tech stack?
In this collection of sessions from our user conference, Puppetize PDX, speakers share insights on the tools that have helped their organizations innovate and automate various aspects of development and delivery as well as strategies for adapting them to your team’s needs.
ITIL is dead, long live ITIL (in spirit)
In spite of all hope to the contrary, the spirit of ITIL lives on in thousands of organizations around the globe, and seems to be a blocker for DevOps in one way or another in many of these. So what are some of the things we can do within an ITIL framework to move towards a DevOps utopia?
In this talk, David Alexander, principal sales engineer at Puppet, considers how small changes can create big improvements without significantly impacting risk and how you can start automating towards the future right now.
Brave new world: civilized provisioning with Terraform
Terraform is used by thousands of organizations for multi-platform resource provisioning across on-prem datacenters, public and private clouds, and containers. It uses declarative descriptions of resources like cloud instances, VPCs, databases, and more to reconcile the state of the real world against the desired state. Once it's created, though, what's next? How do you smoothly bring new EC2 instances under management, connect them to the rest of the infrastructure, and handle the rest of their lifecycle?
Ranjit Viswakumar, senior solutions engineer at HashiCorp, walks through some battle-tested workflows that connect Terraform provisioning to ongoing management with Puppet and Bolt, and examines the main points of integration between the ecosystems.
DevOps performance from a different data set
What can you learn about DevOps and software delivery practices by looking at data from a platform with more than 300,000 developers, 25,000 organizations, and 25+ million builds per month? What items pop out from the data? Is data aggregated through platform usage different from opt-in survey responses?
In this talk, Michael Stahnke, VP of platform at CircleCI, presents an analysis of anonymized team data from millions of builds to share insights, behaviors, and metrics that help teams build better software, and compares this to survey data, identifying similarities and counterpoints.
ChatOps giving DevOps a turbo boost
How long does it take organizations to determine whether new hires are effective at their jobs? At Transurban, CTO Mithran Naiker reveals, this is a day-zero activity. In this talk, he covers how his team has used Puppet, Webex, ServiceNow, and ChatOps to lower the barrier to learning new skills and complete simple tasks across the business.
Four ways to master the art of continuous improvement
Up to 80% of outages are preventable. With a focus on never-ending improvement, your team can release better applications faster — without the fire drills. In this talk, Melanie Macari, senior product marketing manager at Splunk + VictorOps, discusses the art of mastering continuous improvement with solutions from Splunk, VictorOps, and Puppet.
Learn how the right set of tools helps teams accelerate feedback loops and knowledge share, gain insights into software delivery cycles, automate processes, and optimize incident response.
