New Puppet Enterprise release delivers security, performance updates
The spring release of Puppet Enterprise is now available. Puppet continues to build out its flagship product to help organizations scale DevOps initiatives, meet compliance requirements, and deliver on cloud and hybrid initiatives. With this release, we’ve focused on delivering key enhancements to help boost productivity, giving organizations the ability to automate faster and more securely at scale.
More secure authentication
With a focus on security, we’ve added SAML 2.0 support. SAML enables teams to configure multi-factor authentication (MFA) and single sign-on (SSO) to strengthen their security posture. With MFA and SSO configured, customers now have a more secure way to access their environment, tooling and applications through Puppet. To learn more, check out our blog post dedicated to SAML 2.0 support. In addition to SAML 2.0 support, we have added additional password complexity requirements -- off by default, customers can now add additional security to their applications.
Custom defaults for Value Report
Thanks to the great feedback from many of our customers, we are excited to announce that the ability to save custom defaults for the Value Report is now available. Custom defaults will allow customers to tailor the report for their needs. Check out the docs for more on this.
Seamless patching with plans
Typical patching processes can result in a number of time-consuming, manual steps that lead to headaches; we’ve presented on this topic a bit. In a previous release, we introduced our automated patching workflow to eliminate some of these painful steps. With Puppet Enterprise 2021.1, we’ve taken that workflow one step further. Customers can now save even more time by fully orchestrating the pre- and post-patching steps including: ensuring nodes are in a good state with health checks, patching pre- and post-command hooks, and rebooting the server, all via a single plan. See it in action here.
Run faster with Puppet DB performance improvements
Improvements to sync queries and optimizations have led to impressive performance updates with one customer seeing a 750% improvement with fact filtering from the Puppet console. Additional improvements include default timeouts that ensure stuck queries don’t hold up other changes, and overall speed in query completion. Check out PuppetDB’s docs for more information on these improvements.
Puppet Enterprise 2021.1 ships with Puppet 7 as the platform. A few highlights from this release include Facter 4, a bump to Ruby 2.7, better separation between public and sensitive data, and so much more. Check out this blog that goes into much more detail about the Puppet 7 release.
