Moving from the Azure VM extension to a better supported workflow

On 3 February 2020 we removed Puppet’s Microsoft Azure VM extension. We understand that your teams may have been affected by this removal, so we have temporarily re-enabled the agent extension handler.

Going forward, we recommend that you use the simplified PE package installer in conjunction with the Azure ARM template to help bootstrap your agents. The documentation can be found on our installing agents page.

It’s important to note that the re-enabling of this extension is going to be a temporary measure, as we have plans to completely remove the custom Azure extension in April. This extension has been a source of confusion for many users and now we have better supported workflows for agent bootstrapping.

As you plan to migrate off of the extension, we would greatly appreciate it if you could let us know your migration timeline by emailing us at PEProduct@puppet.com.

We want to thank all our users who have been using the Azure extension, and we hope you will find success with this alternate path moving forward.
