It’s the end of a long week filled with countless taxing IT change requests. You put your mobile phone on vibrate, still apprehensive from the ALL CAPS text message abruptly received from the IT director last week. Your eyes are burning from the blue hue of your laptop. You begin to shut it down for the evening, lower the TV volume, and sluggishly doze into a deep sleep.

As the sounds of “Hans Zimmer - Time (Inception)” crescendos in the background, the Ghosts of Automation Tools Past (GATPast), Present (GATPres), and Future (GATF) decide to visit you.

Let’s travel back in time. The GATPast appears and flies over the colocation data center where your company leases a couple of server rack cabinets. The GATPast reveals that we are in the year 2011, and although your current open source automation tool allows you to discover resources faster and quickly provision new servers, it’s capable of much more.

The GATPast hovers over the handful of servers under your management and exclaims, “In the next few years, your data center infrastructure will expand due to an increased demand for physical and virtual computing resources.”

To your astonishment, the GATPast vanishes right before your eyes. You are a bit perplexed and left contemplating managing more servers, applications, and devices than you are now.

Let’s glide into the present. The GATPres swoops into the data center and informs you that we are now in the year 2020. You both begin to elevate into the sky amongst the clouds. The GATPres announces that “the world is navigating the new normal after several months hunkered down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Everyone is working remotely from home, and millions of people are unemployed.”

The GATPres tells you that “cloud computing is disrupting all aspects of IT infrastructure and operations around the globe. Your organization has embraced this trend and created a cloud strategy to transform your infrastructure and collectively accelerate business growth. Believe it or not, automation is the superglue that holds all of this together.”

The GATPres drop you from the sky, you begin to fall rapidly, and the GATF miraculously grabs your hand right before you hit the ground.

Let’s land and expand into the future. You safely land outside of a massive solar farm that powers all the new apps your team has built in cloud-native environments and are running on GCP in 2025. The GATF shows you the DevOps automation world to come, plentiful with services to connect and integrate your existing tools, APIs, and infrastructure programmatically through smarter workflows.

You’re excited to discover that Puppet is building the future of DevOps automation with an event-driven system of intelligence that observes and automatically triggers incidents, tickets, monitoring alerts, and cloud events with orchestration to eliminate low-level tasks.

Amazed, almost disbelieving, you begin to wonder if this is all just a dream. Finally, you wake up soaked in sweat and look around as if you’ve seen a ghost.

“The automation expertise of Puppet for cloud-native? How could it be?” You ask yourself. “And how do I bridge the gap between the past, present, and future with my automation software?”

Bridging the gap with Puppet

The answer is you should bridge the gap between the past, present, and future with Puppet, an intelligent automation platform that seamlessly automates your infrastructure workloads. In this post, you’ve already spent some dream time with the Ghosts of Automation Tools Past (GATPast), Present (GATPres), and Future (GATF).

Now let’s expand on the foundation of open source Puppet (OSP) and the present with Bolt. One of the benefits of using OSP is the ability to reduce the cost of maintaining your servers by automating the configuration and management of your infrastructure. OSP is excellent for individual IT administrators managing several to thousands of servers and allows you to discover your resources within minutes. You can even provision new nodes quickly in the cloud, hybrid, or physical environments.

We recently introduced a unique Open Source Puppet Support service for OSP users that provides access to a portal designed as a “one-stop-shop.”

Open Source Puppet Support services include:

  • Access to a dedicated portal that includes training, blogs, product downloads and exclusive content created specifically for open source users.
  • Tooling and documentation to enhance your experience using open source Puppet, including easy-to-find links to modules and projects.
  • Three scheduled sessions working with a support engineer for guidance and troubleshooting specific Puppet components.

Building on the OSP foundation that provides a simple agentless way to automate anything, from one-off tasks to complex workflows is Bolt. You can extend your current tool chain and processes by expanding your capabilities with Bolt’s open source agentless task orchestrator. And if you have used Bolt for some time now and have a greater need for governance, flexibility, and team-oriented built-in workflows, then you can easily move to Puppet Enterprise.

If the chart below identifies some of your potential past and present automation challenges, then you should consider accelerating your future with the Puppet Enterprise platform.

Past and present challenges Your future with the Puppet Enterprise platform
Locked in with model-based only approach to automation Gain flexibility with a combination of model-based, task-based, and event-driven automation approaches
Silos exist between application and deployment teams Get greater visibility across all teams by breaking down silos and unifying processes and tooling
Need better time to value and difficulty managing changes at scale Get started faster with ad hoc tasks and deliver infrastructure changes more reliably. Analyze the potential impact of changes before moving forward.
Concerns around security, regulations, and compliance Help to comply with regulatory compliance standards such as PCI, SOX, and HIPAA
Lengthy manual efforts to ensure vulnerabilities are rectified Quickly identify infrastructure risk from CVEs and remediate swiftly
