Senior Technical Instructor

at Puppet, Inc. Singapore or Sydney Office

Hi, I’m Nikki McDonald, Senior Manager of Technical Education at Puppet,

I’m looking for a Senior Technical Instructor to join our team to deliver best-in-class technical learning experiences for our global audience.

At Puppet, the Global Knowledge Management team is a geographically dispersed team of learning professionals. We’re dedicated to providing the right information to the right person in the right way at the right time. We work in partnership with product engineering and other teams to ensure we’re providing our customers, partners, and internal teams with effective and engaging opportunities to build proficiency using Puppet software.

We’re looking for someone with a gift for explaining technical concepts simply using real world examples and analogies. We want an instructor who derives personal satisfaction from helping others achieve their learning goals and is able to create and sustain high-energy, highly engaging learning experiences virtually and in person. You will use your experience in adult education and your deep technical background to help us expand, evolve, and modernize our technical education courses.

We’re seeking team members who can thrive autonomously in a fast-paced, remote environment. To be a successful technical instructor at Puppet, you must be intellectually curious and driven to stay current on technology and technical education trends. You’d be a good team fit if you also possess a strong propensity for action, results, and continuous improvement.

As a Technical Instructor at Puppet, you will:

  • Facilitate courses and workshops (80%)
    • Deliver public and private, virtual and onsite courses and workshops. May include domestic and international travel up to 25%, although travel is not currently required.
    • Be a positive, supportive, and encouraging change agent. Training is one of the first engagements new customers have, and it’s your responsibility to kick off the customer journey effectively to expedite time to value and promote adoption.
    • Continually explore new methods for facilitating interaction and increasing learner engagement to improve knowledge retention and learner satisfaction.
  • Contribute to the development, maintenance, and improvement of educational content (15%)
    • Work with the Global Knowledge Management team’s instructional designers and give feedback to validate instructionally sound, effective, educational assets, which includes courseware, eLearning modules, blogs, and videos.
    • Serve as a learner advocate to ensure we’re meeting our customers where they are and taking them where they need to be by creating a continuous improvement feedback loop.
  • Engage in continuous learning and professional development (10%)
    • Attend, or consume, a minimum of 24 hours of training on relevant technical topics quarterly to ensure your skills remain current.
    • Adopt and maintain a growth mindset by continually seeking out new opportunities to learn and build your abilities.

Who you will collaborate with . . .

  • Global Knowledge Management team members who are creating enablement and product-based learning experiences.
  • Internal instructional designers who create instructionally sound, engaging, and interactive enablement content.

Who are you?

  • You are an intuitive educator who enjoys finding new ways to solve problems and make learning accessible and engaging.
  • You are an excellent communicator, capable of translating complex technical concepts for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • You have a strong stage presence with the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, employees, and customers.
  • You are an empathetic, dynamic, and collaborative player who is adept at building effective relationships within our geographically distributed team.
  • You are committed to working in, and fostering an inclusive, diverse, and respectful culture.

What valuable experience and skills will you bring to the table?

  • At least 3 years of experience delivering technical training with excellent facilitation and presentation skills.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience as Unix/Linux and/or Windows SysAdmin or DevOps engineer, including automation.
  • Experience using Ruby, Python, Perl or other high-level programming languages.
  • Excitement about working with the Puppet Enterprise and open source community.

Bonus, but not required (shout about it in your application if you have experience)

  • Experience with education technology such as learning management systems, video services, content development tools, and virtual delivery platforms.
  • Recent coding experience in a procedural or object-oriented programming language and a scripting language
  • Knowledge of data center management, systems management, monitoring, networking, and cybersecurity.

We are hiring at various experience levels and we’re particularly interested in having a diverse team with a broad set of skills and viewpoints. If this seems like your dream job, but you’re not sure if you qualify, apply anyway!
