Senior SysOps Engineer

at Puppet, Inc. Remote United States

Hi, I’m Nathan Brubaker, Sr. Manager of IT at Puppet,

I’m looking for a Senior SysOps Engineer to help manage our global network and server infrastructure.   You'll play a key role in expanding our company's technical operations to help us grow, all while overcoming the challenges of having systems at the other end of the world!

At Puppet, the IT Operations Team manages our global network, and hosts infrastructure for our non-engineering teams. We make sure that the people and teams at Puppet have the tools they need to get the job done. Our most frequent collaborators are the engineers in our Developer Services Team, who manage infrastructure for our Engineering teams.

Meaningful work you’ll contribute:

  • Work with peers inside and outside our team to drive continuous improvement in Puppet’s network operations, hosted services, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Configure and manage networking and infrastructure in Puppet’s data centers and cloud environments
  • Work with stakeholders across the company to create solutions that best suit Puppet’s changing infrastructure needs.
  • Ensure that all IT SysOps managed services are up to date, secured, monitored, and well documented.
  • Maintain and contribute to the improvement of our networking & Linux-based services, including the connectivity, reliability, security, monitoring, metrics and documentation of such systems.
  • Collaborate with our InfoSec team to create and implement a strategy for upgrading and patching system software throughout Puppet’s globally distributed infrastructure.
  • Provide on-call support for Puppet’s essential network and server infrastructure.

You are…

  • Your customer’s champion. We serve our customers by managing their expectations and delivering what we promise.
  • Inquisitive. You are curious about Puppet’s network and infrastructure operations, and eager to develop an understanding of the infrastructure that underpins it. You pursue training and development opportunities, and strive to continuously build knowledge and skills.
  • A Problem Solver. You have strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills with the ability to exercise good judgment in ambiguous situations.
  • A team player. You effectively partner with your peers across the company

Valuable experiences and skills you’ll bring to Puppet:

  • 5+ years of experience configuring network devices and working in Linux based server environments.
  • A solid understanding of basic Networking principles such as Ethernet, Internet Protocol (including subnetting/CIDR), NAT, VLANs, DNS, DHCP, VPN and SSL encryption.
  • Experience with enterprise network infrastructure from vendors such as Cisco, HP, Juniper or Palo Alto.
  • Experience administering or working in heavily Linux-biased environments (Debian or EL).
  • Experience with Linux-based troubleshooting and performance tools, such as tcpdump, iperf, top, netcat, or Wireshark.
  • Comfort working with outside vendors for equipment procurement and technical support.
  • Familiarity with writing basic scripts (in any language).
  • Basic understanding of dynamic routing protocols such as RIP, OSPF or BGP.
  • Experience building infrastructure as code with tools such as Terraform and CloudFormation.
  • Experience with AWS and GCP networking concepts and implementation best practices.
  • Ability to work as part of a distributed team.

Bonus, but not required (shout about it in your application if you have experience):

  • Cisco CCNA, Juniper JNCIA, or similar.
  • Experience working with dynamic routing protocols such as RIP, OSPF or BGP.
  • Configuration management familiarity, particularly with Puppet.
  • Familiarity with the different fibre-optic cabling and interface standards (e.g. SMF, MMF, SFP, etc).
  • Familiarity with a high-level programming language. (We use a lot of Ruby and Python.).
  • Experience in migrating & supporting applications on Kubernetes.

We are hiring at various experience levels and we’re particularly interested in having a diverse team with a broad set of skills and viewpoints. If this seems like your dream job, but you’re not sure if you qualify, apply anyway!

*Covid Vaccination Requirement for US employees

In the U.S., Puppet employees are required to have proof of vaccination for COVID-19. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines “fully vaccinated” as two weeks after the second dose for Pfizer and Moderna, and two weeks after the single dose of Johnson & Johnson. Puppet will require proof of vaccination and consider requests for exemption from this requirement during the post-offer pre-employment phase as a reasonable accommodation for medical reasons or sincerely held religious beliefs where the accommodation would not cause Puppet undue hardship.

*Visa Sponsorship

Please note, this position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
