Senior UX Designer

at Puppet, Inc. Belfast, Northern Ireland

Hi, I’m Melissa Casburn, Director of UX at Puppet. We’re looking for a Senior UX Designer to join our global team.

Puppet is refining its offerings from several differentiated products to a converging set of workflows. These will support teams working together across large enterprises that increasingly use cloud-based infrastructure from multiple providers alongside VMs and bare metal (we call this a “hybrid estate”). This shift presents specific design challenges: seeking new ways to help customers achieve their goals with the intersection of products, increasing UX consistency across tools, and collaborating more effectively with Product Management and Engineering. This includes one of our newest products, Puppet Comply, which helps customers automate and enforce policy as code.

In this role you will shape the experience of our compliance offering by conducting research studies and designing solutions that help our customers achieve their desired outcomes. You will help inspire a sense of mastery over the systems they’re managing with our tools. You will step bravely into technical discussions and ask “why?” repeatedly to ensure our products help our users complete their work faster and more easily than they could have before, even when those solutions are challenging to implement. You will develop mutually beneficial relationships with designers, researchers, product managers, and software engineers in all regions where Puppet operates. You will provide support and mentoring to designers who are earlier in their careers (or in a specific skill) and seek opportunities to learn and grow.

In your first year at Puppet you will:

  • Partner with our UX Researcher to give our user personas more shape and clarity as they relate to compliance, and animate those personas with storyboards, user stories, and design work.
  • Partner with a Product Manager to articulate the evolution of our compliance capabilities to better serve customers with hybrid infrastructure. Present the findings and proposed solutions to key stakeholders in Product and Engineering, and lead the design work with the help of UI designers.
  • Partner with Principal UX Designers to help align compliance features with broader platform features (such as reporting and configuration management) that support the new vision for our products.

You are:

  • Laser-focused on identifying our customers’ desired outcomes and designing relevant solutions
  • Able to relate design decisions to business strategy and research data
  • Effective at communicating with words, pictures, prototypes, and wireframes
  • Ready to collaborate with a cross-functional global team to deliver on shared goals (and okay with regular late-afternoon meetings with folks on the west coast of the United States)
  • Technically curious, seeking out and becoming immersed in the challenge of creating great software products that stretch technology and empower customers
  • Focused on seeing work through to completion with a strong eye for detail
  • Committed to practicing ethical and inclusive design
  • Focused on delivering customer value quickly

Experiences and skills you’ll bring to Puppet:

  • Minimum 5 years of UX research and product design experience, preferably with ownership over an entire digital product (or a substantial portion of one)
  • Delivering insights from qualitative and quantitative research to a broad audience in an accessible manner
  • Collaborating with Product Managers to write user stories
  • Designing software in an agile environment: familiarity with scrum, user stories, and dual-track design practices
  • Designing in ways that deliver signal instead of noise in high-data environments, and that guide users to appropriate actions
  • Skilled at information architecture and the use of low-fidelity design artifacts: storyboards, workflow diagrams, wireframes, prototypes

Bonus, but not required (shout about it in your application if you have experience):

  • High-fidelity UI design skills
  • Experience with Figma and Dovetail
  • Experience conducting remote research
  • Experience designing enterprise software
  • Familiarity with Puppet tools (or those of our competitors) and with DevOps
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a technology, software, or design-related discipline, or equivalent professional experience
