UX Researcher

Hi, I’m Melissa Casburn, Director of UX at Puppet.

We’re looking for a UX Researcher to join our global team. The person in this role will work with me, the Director of Research, Product Managers, Engineers, and UX designers to shape the experience of our products by building and nurturing research participant pipelines, designing and executing research studies, helping to marry the results with analytics data to give informed guidance to the organization, and driving improvements to our ResearchOps process.

Our users are passionate about improving our products and technologies; over 1,000 of them have volunteered to participate in the research process. Puppet is refining its offering from several differentiated products to a converging set of workflows that support different teams working apart and together within large enterprises, and our participant pool must evolve as well. 

Puppet tools are more than the GUI: we also offer APIs and command-line tools. Our products serve a technical audience. You should have an affinity for technology and empathy for people who do technical jobs. You have a strong technical aptitude which you will use to understand system administration, Puppet tools, and related software that our users live and breathe.

If you’re the right person for the job, after getting accustomed to working at Puppet you will have:

• Helped evolve our products to accommodate diverse user needs, fulfill Puppet’s business objectives, and deliver a compelling product experience for those who rely on them.
• Learned about how customers can (or can’t) use our products, and made related recommendations.
• Stepped bravely into technical discussions and asked “why?” repeatedly to ensure our products help our users get their work done better than they could have without them, even when that’s challenging to implement.
• Developed mutually beneficial relationships with UX architects, UI designers, product managers, and software engineers in all regions where Puppet operates.
• Actively worked with Product Management, Marketing, Product Marketing, and our analyst/research partners to ingest and share customer insights across the organization and ensure we maximize the return on our investment in every research study regardless of where it originates.

You are:

• Effective at conducting qualitative & quantitative remote research using storyboards, prototypes, and mockups

• Able to tie research goals & recommendations to business goals
• Ready to collaborate with a cross-functional team to deliver on shared goals

• Technically curious, seeking out and becoming immersed in the challenge of creating great software products that stretch technology and empower customers
• Focused on seeing work through to completion with a strong eye for detail
• Skilled at succinctly communicating key information, tailored to the audience you are addressing
• Committed to practicing ethical and inclusive research

Valuable experiences and skills you’ll bring to Puppet:

• Minimum 3 years of UX research experience, preferably in a software company with complex enterprise applications
• Familiarity and experience with qualitative & quantitative UX research methodologies, (e.g., field studies, contextual inquiry, surveys, concept evaluation, usability testing, and benchmarking) and strong desire to expand your knowledge & skills
• Experience partnering with subject matter experts to maximize the learnings in each research study
• Able to work efficiently without compromising research integrity
• Able to package & present research findings using written, verbal, and visual methods

Bonus, but not required (shout about it in your application if you have experience):

• Managing participants & studies in a centralized platform (we currently use Dovetail)
• Familiarity with product telemetry/analytics and how to combine it with research study outcomes to develop a point of view
• Familiarity with Puppet tools (or those of our competitors) and with DevOps, or previous experience in our industry
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in a technology, software, or design-related discipline, or equivalent professional experience
