Did you know that we hold near-weekly webinars on a variety of topics, from DevOps to Puppet product releases? We’ve held some exceptional roundtable discussions recently: on key findings in this year’s State of DevOps Report, to the future of software-defined networking, to the intersection between Docker containers and configuration management tools, and more.
Here’s a quick roundup of the latest webinars. To watch them in full, visit our Webinar Library.
2014 State of DevOps Report
The authors of the 2014 State of DevOps Report gathered for a jam-packed hour, covering insights from this year’s DevOps survey. Gene Kim, Jez Humble, Nicole Forsgren Velasquez, and Nigel Kersten discussed what surprised them about this year’s results, including:
- IT performance is a competitive advantage and firms with high-performing IT organizations were twice as likely to exceed their profitability, market share, and productivity goals
- DevOps practices improve IT performance, which can be measured by deploy frequency, mean time to recover, and lead time for changes
- Correlating organizational culture and job satisfaction to IT performance
Here are some highlights from the webinar:
The Future of Network Automation & SDN
At the end of June, we announced our Puppet Supported Program, a certification program that makes it possible to extend the benefits of automation across the entire data center. With partners like Arista Networks, Brocade, Cisco, Cumulus Networks, Dell, EMC, F5, Huawei and NetApp, we’re taking Puppet beyond managing just compute resources, and enabling more integrations with networking and storage devices.
In this webinar on the Future of Network Automation, we heard about software-defined networking trends from Forrester analyst Glenn O’Donnell.
Managing Load-Balanced Applications with F5 and Puppet
F5 is another one of our partners participating in the Puppet Supported Program, and in this webinar we demonstrated how the newly updated F5 module is able to automate the management of F5 load balancers. We also heard a bit more about future integration with F5 products.
Getting Started with Puppet Enterprise 3.3
July also brought the release of Puppet Enterprise 3.3. We had a chance to hear about what’s new in this latest release, including how to get Puppet Enterprise up and running faster. Chris Barker, technical solutions engineer at Puppet Labs, led us through the new, streamlined and GUI-based installation process.
Deploying from Version Control with the VCSRepo Module
The VCSRepo module is one of the newly added Puppet Supported modules that came with the release of Puppet Enterprise 3.3. The module allows you to deploy content directly from version control. Product owner Ryan Coleman provided an in-depth demonstration of the basics of managing resources with Puppet, all the way to checking out specific Git repository commits via Puppet.
Puppet & Docker: Using Containers with Configuration Management
James Turnbull, the VP of Services at Docker, joined us for a discussion about the intersection between containers and configuration management with Puppet. David Lutterkort, principal engineer at Puppet Labs, then introduced the code snippets that allow you to puppetize Docker hosts, author Docker images with and without a Puppet master, and run Puppet within a Docker container.
Puppet Enterprise & VMware Integrations
Finally, we had a chance to go over the latest integrations of Puppet Enterprise with VMware products, including the vCloud Automation Center, and to hear a little more about the roadmap for future integration points.
A lot of people have been asking about how to use r10k to manage developing, test and production environments, and git workflow best practices, and so we’re excited to have professional services engineer Gary Larizza and r10k author Adrien Thebo do a 60-minute deep dive into this topic next week.
Git Workflow Best Practices & Deploying with r10k
When: Tuesday, Aug. 26, 11 a.m. (PDT)
We’re also looking forward to the upcoming Configuration Management 101, a webinar that will cover the basic principles of automation, and feature senior technical solutions engineer Dale Dasker. If you know anyone just getting started with Puppet or thinking about automating their infrastructure, then this will be a great introductory session for them.
